The Power of Expression

During your headshot session, you do not have to change much to achieve a different look. Of course, many of my clients come to my studio prepared to shoot multiple looks. They bring an assortment of wardrobe options and maybe even plan on changing their hair and makeup throughout the session. Doing this will provide a different look; however, there is a quick and straightforward way of achieving a different look. Any guesses on how we can do this? Well, the answer is simply by changing your expression.

I know some people who are reading this think it is not always easy to come up with not only one but two great expressions during a headshot session. I am here to tell you that you do not need to worry about how you can accomplish this. That is correct. The expression part is not your responsibility, but the photographer’s responsibility. It is my job to coach these expressions out of you. As I like to call it, expression coaching is a skill I have developed from years of experience shooting Professional Business Headshots.

My two favourite expressions for business professionals are:

  1. A full natural smile. The key here is the “natural” part, and you won’t hear me say “cheese” or “smile” during the entire session.
  2. Confident and approachable. For this one, I like a small smile with no teeth showing. The icing on the cake here is the confident eyes.

If you look at the two example photos of Josh I have included in this post, you will see both a full natural smile as well as a confident and approachable expression.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding any of the information provided in this article, and as always, I look forward to working with you.
